Virunga National Park is one of the last sanctuaries of the mountain gorilla. However, due to illegal lumbering and poaching due to the arrival of refugees during the civil war in DR Congo, the park was enlisted in one of the endangered World Heritage Sites.
Over the last ten years more than 120 gamewardens were killed while trying to defend the park from poachers.700 remaining gorillas share the tragedy of this country: war, poaching, hepatitis…. Shall the rain forest at the foothill of the volcano, loose each one of these giants?
The result of our photoproject of mountain gorillas in Virunga National Park, was a damaged camera, a broken arm and a dislocated shoulder, not o mention the endless respect for this fascinating beast! In just a glimpse of a moment, we found ourselves between a large silverback male and his females, and a moment later we all felt the full strength of the 300 kilo’s, heavy good-natured giant.
